A Classical Carved and Figured Mahogany Bookcase on Stand, attributed to Anthony H. Jenkins, Baltimore, Maryland, 1835

This bookcase on stand is highly distinctive and relates to a school of cabinetry in Baltimore attributed to Anthony H. Jenkins. The notable element is the pair of magnificently carved door panels with medallions and water leaves. Another interesting note is the raised central drawerfront, which is not flat, but rather graded up on four angles which meet at the central key.
Several related casepieces of this genre, all exhibiting the above stylistic elements, are shown in the scanned materials below.
This bookcase rests on strong columns with iconic capitals above and well-carved paw feet with acanthus carving above. The upper drawers are flat with satinwood banding. The wood used throughout this casepiece is highly figured, all of which makes a very important strong presentation; the cabinetry and design are of the first rank. This secretary is one of the nicest within its groupings, and this grouping is probably one of the finest examples of Classical casework in America.
