A Carved Mahogany Classical Desk/Bookcase, New England, c.1830

Scroll down for 8 more photos

This monumental desk/bookcase is composed of solid mahogany with highly figured mahogany veneers that have retained a vibrant visual glow. It is in superb condition with no alterations or repairs. The legs are robustly turned and embellished with magnificent acanthus carving, as are the capitals of the upper columns, with their deep acanthus and scroll carvings. The pediment, with its overhang just above the glass doors is reminiscent of the urban work done in New York by shops, like J. & J.W. Meeks, (see scanned item). Although this is obviously a provincial interpretation, it is executed in the finest New York manner (see image of dovetails). This desk also has an interior writing surface.

This casepiece has a commanding presence with its magnificent carved turned legs and columns, and although tall, it has a very light yet strong feeling of lift and openness.

Height: 86 in. Writing Height: 32 in. Width:41 1/2 in. Depth: 25 in.
