A Mahogany Tilt-top Breakfast Table, England, c.1790

The mahogany top on this table is composed of a single unjoined solid mahogany board. You can imagine the size of the tree this came from. The wood is finely figured, and was well chosen, as, throughout the centuries, it has retained its form without warping. The column has a large urn which is supported by four curule form legs terminating in square cuffs and castors.
