A Fine Early Mahogany 3-shell Newport Desk, c.1750, attributed to John Goddard

Composed of beautifully figured dark, dense Cuban mahogany, this is what the famous Newport desks are known for.  Some hallmarks of the Newport tradition are the shaped arch-work above the small pencil drawers above the valances in the interior and the wonderful carved Newport shell.   What’s of particular interest is that this desk is very close to the one described in the seminal book on Newport furniture by Michael Moses, Master Craftsmen of Newport; The Townsends and Goddards.   Here he shows an early documented desk by John Goddard, upon which we base our attribution.  (Note the similarities shown in the comparison images below).   Both have the early style carved shell and the small lopers (the side supports for the lid).   Also note the very sharp beautiful dovetails, which Newport is known for, exhibiting the finest of early Colonial craftsmanship.   John Goddard is considered the finest of the Newport craftsmen.
