Federal One-drawer Stand with Saber Legs, probably New England, c.1820
This one drawer stand is composed of several woods. Most interestingly, the top and sides of the case are butternut with a figured mahogany drawer front. The legs are cherry and the post maple, making this table a veritable smorgasbord of woods…not to speak of the pine drawer sides and bottom. Obviously, the cabinetmaker used what he had and the total composition is entirely successful, and exhibits a contrasting yellow-brown glow, creating visual interest.
