An Inlaid Mahogany Hepplewhite Demi-lune Card Table with Five Legs, Newport, RI, School of John Townsend and/or Contemporary, c.1800

Scroll down for 10 more photos

This card table is quintessential Newport with the inlaid bookend moldings, oval patera, and checkered & line inlay (see detailed images).   Also note the developed concave edge moldings on the leaves, a mark of superior craftsmanship and attention to detail seen on some Newport tables.  A rare and desirable feature also closely associated with Newport cabinetry is the five leg design, seen here with matching string and banding inlay.

This card table is a very fine example of federal cabinetry coming out of Newport, exemplifying its long tradition of producing the finest furniture.  For a related example of this type, see attached scan from The Magazine Antiques, showing a labeled example by John Townsend.
