A Chippendale Cherry Tilt-Top Table with Serpentine Top, Boston, c.1770

These serpentine edge “square tops” were less popular than those of round shape, hence few are to be found.   This table is composed of several cherry boards which is typical, as cherry does not grow in wide widths, as does mahogany.  The cherry wood has a beautiful original red brown glow, which is only achieved after much time.  It is closely related to a table shown in New England Furniture, Brock Jobe & Myrna Kaye.   This table relates to another previously sold from our collection (see item sw00041).  Yet another comparative is illustrated in Furniture of Historic Deerfield, Fales.
