Carved Mahogany Tall Case Clock with 8 Westminster Chimes by William Durfee, c.1890

This is one of the finest and most elaborate tall case clocks of the period with magnificent carvings throughout showcasing two carved putti supports. The hood of the clock has elaborately carved shells, and the various carved element used throughout are carefully chosen from early rococo designs. Many of the clocks that attempt elaborate decoration during this period become "Victorianized" with outrageous and almost comically superfluous carving.
