Walnut Eastlake Armoire with Beveled Glass Mirrors, c.1880
This armoire is a tour de force of the Eastlake design. The wood is walnut with additional burl walnut inlays. As can be seen in the attachment, the craftsmanship is superb and intricate. This armoire retains its original pulls, which are quite interesting and Eastlake . This armoire breaks down into many components for easy transport, i.e. the top comes off; the doors come out; and the sides and back are detachable. In a country that was growing rapidly in the late 19th
century this element of “knockdown” furniture is employed as it was by
the British in the early part of the 19th century with Campaign
furniture, which looked like regular furniture, except it all came apart in
pieces for transportability. We
have refinished this piece and French polished it to bring out the glorious
and commanding appearance.
