A Mahogany Tilt-top Table with Birdcage and Spiral Urn, Newport, c.1760-80

This table was acquired in Wickford, RI from the estate of Thomas Steere.  Wickford is right across the bay from Newport.  A very closely related table with a Rhode Island provenance, which is in the Newport Historical Society, is illustrated in The Arts and Crafts of Newport by Ralph Carpenter, and in American Furniture 1999, pg. 11. While there are some differences in the turnings under the urn, no two of these tables would be exactly alike, as they were turned by hand.  (See attached scanned images below.)  Note the birdcage posts have the same turnings.  Our experience tells us that these, no doubt, came from the same Newport shop.  Also, the wood is that dark, heavy mahogany one sees in the best Newport work.

Height: 28 in.  Diameter: 29 in. x 29 3/4 in.
