Chippendale, George III, Mahogany Armchair, c.1790

The carved backsplat on this chair is beautifully developed and makes a very important statement. The chair itself is transitional, leaning toward the Hepplewhite period with its square, tapered legs, retaining its their original stretchers (which are why this piece hung together all these years). The arms are beautifully sculptured and fluted, as are the chair styles.  Armchairs are very desirable as not only were there fewer of them made, but even less survive as the arms often take their share of pressure and abuse.
