A Mahogany Pembroke Table attributed to Prouty, New York, c.1830-40
This dramatic card table is one of a small grouping of known works that share a singularly characteristic carved eagle head with exaggerated features, (i.e. the bulbous eyes and beak). A labeled Pembroke table with related pedestal and feet is illustrated in Antiques Magazine, May 1973. Also, the Rhode Island School of Design Museum exhibited in 1995 a worktable with the same carved foot.
In our collection, also see the related center table (sw00962) and a related pair of card tables (sw00724).
This is a exuberant example of the best of the Empire or Neoclassic wherein the cabinetmaker has sculpted a trademark eagle head in a provincial manner that is a standout in any grouping of furniture of this period.
Height: 29 in. Width: 22 1/4in.- 44 1/2in. Depth: 40 in.
