This sofa is related to a box sofa of the same form made for the home of
Steven Whitney, 7 Bowling Green, New York, in 1827 and is on exhibit en suite
with other pieces made by Phyfe for this family in the Whitney Cove at the
Museum of the City of New York.
Interestingly, their box sofa shares the same unique butterfly rosette
and attribution is based on similarity of form and rosette.
This
piece speaks for itself with the grand gilt capitols and fully developed reeded
melon feet (see detail). This is a form typical of the empire period
at its fullest development in New York and, for its form, one of the best.
