Pair of Mahogany Chippendale style Gothic Beds, England, c.1840

This extraordinary pair of beds has classic cluster column posts and carved embellishments which effectively tie the clusters together. These beds illustrate a well-executed design composition with commensurate craftsmanship of the highest quality. The elaborate cluster columns with urn finials are only part of the design and rest upon square Gothic arched inlaid carved plinths.
The posts are all very heavy, dense, and of closed grain, indicative of the best mahogany.  The back posts are traditionally plainer and are beautifully tapered and massive, allowing the visual statement to be made with the headboard.

The headboard is composed of an open lattice carved pediment typical of its high style Chippendale design context.  The scrolled carving within the pediment is beautifully executed.
Below the pediment, an inlaid paneled headboard with bookend matched flame mahogany of contrasting colors create a dramatic composition.

Similar to the headboard, all rails are paneled with highly figured mahogany inset with a beaded edge molding.  The embellishment of rails is not often done, as they are usually left as plain square stock in the four tall-post bed form.

Double beds are used often in guest bedrooms and this pair makes an important statement in the type of room that calls for a rich, formal, and elaborate statement.  These are fine solid beds, the best of their category, and interestingly, employ rarely seen double bolts, as if to say “these beds aren’t going anywhere, they’re special”.
