Carved Chinese Display Chest, c. 1870

This late Chinese export display piece is a tour de force of carving. There is open carving around all upper shelving and a striking base. The two doors are fully carved and the surfaces of all uncarved elements are fully reeded, leaving no surface unworked; interestingly, the backs of all scrolled shelving in the upper case are fully carved, as are their fronts.
