These footstools employ the curule leg design used throughout this period. A related footstool labeled by Hancock, Holden, and Adams is illustrated in the magazine Antiques, May 1976.

A comparison with the related footstool shows the higher level of form development shown in our example with regard to the crossbanded box framing with flame mahogany insets that support the needlepoint seat. The Hancock example is simply over-upholstered; also, our example is completely enclosed underneath, which demonstrates the attention to detail, and what separates the superior example from the ordinary.

They are solid and substantial. The curule leg scrolling is embellished with restrained carving at the intersection of its curves, all of which is tied together with a vigorously turned stretcher.

This pair of footstools is in mint condition, with no breaks, et al. The needlepoint seats, while not original, are old and in perfect condition.
