Classical Carved Mahogany Sofa, probably Baltimore, c.1830

This is a large-scale sofa of grandiose proportions which, no doubt complemented the a southern home with rooms of large proportion. Contrasting the large scale of the sofa, is the fineness of carved detail which embellishes each of the arms . Here, a central rosette is magnificently executed for each arm, which is further elaborated with additional acanthus leaf carving.
