Carved Ebonized Chippendale style Slant-top Desk, Anglo-Indian, c.1890

This is a small-scale desk, 30 1/4 inches wide, and is a tour de force of carving. The lid has the North Wind facial motif with scroll carving, which is also used throughout the drawer fronts and sides. If this were not enough, carved figural fantasy animal elements flanking the drawers complete this strong visual statement, which is not to be soon forgotten.
