A Classical Carved Mahogany Pembroke Table, Pillar and Claw, Attributed to Duncan Phyfe or Circle, New York, c.1820-30
Provenance: Bernard & S.Dean Levy, Inc.
This imposing table is considered a masterpiece by David Barquist, as
stated in American Tables and Looking Glasses, wherein he identifies ours
as an "almost identical" table to one he illustrated, which is in the Mabel-Brady Garvan
Collection at Yale (see scans below for photos from this
chapter with additional color plate).
The choice of wood on the top is superb, with strong ribbon grain throughout
and the double elliptic shaped leaves are intensely edge ribbed. The aprons are
developed with deeply carved foliate panels. The support columns are turned and
finely carved with the addition of a Roman pinecone often misidentified,
according to Barquist, as a pineapple. The support base is carved & fluted,
and the paw feet, as Barquist puts it, "has [sic] a bold, energetic quality that
is particularly evident in the animated character of its paw".
We are very proud to present this masterpiece and certainly this is a notable
high point in any classical furniture collection.
