Chippendale Mahogany Secretary Bookcase of Large Scale, Probably New England, c.1790-1800

This large casepiece is composed of visually exciting plum pudding mahogany; although fairly wide, (51 3/4 in.) the excellent proportions in the height of this piece, degree of depth, as well as in the height of the bracket feet create a pleasing complementary overall symmetry. This is a true secretary bookcase in that the upper portion is extremely deep, more so than in a standard secretary.
