This masterful bureau is composed of four drawers which retain their original quality brass pulls. The defining large top drawer is crossbanded with corner insets. The upper drawers are composed of three smaller drawers, the central one with brass and satinwood inlay flanked by two convex drawers which is then complimented by two brass inlaid panels above the carved columns, which nicely relate to the central brass inlaid drawer. The small central drawer has a lock, and obviously was for precious things and the dovetails are extremely fine, evidencing the quality which is seen throughout. This casepiece is developed with traditional empire carved columns which are attractively carved with pineapples at the top followed by fruit and an uncommon hatched motif, which is then followed by traditional acanthus carving. The carved hairy paw feet are similarly strongly carved, with a fairly unique side design, the mark of a quality craftsman. The sides are constructed in the older, more traditional manner of one solid board, which incorporates the rear leg. Chests of this period come with or without backsplash and there is no evidence of this piece ever having been one. The label is inside the small central brass and satinwood inlaid drawer.
