Gothic Mahogany Center Table with Cluster Columns, Boston, c.1840

This classic hexagonal center table uses the six-sided form to its advantage with coordinated matching figured mahogany achieving a dramatic effect (see below). Sometimes, these tables have marble tops, which lean toward a later Victorian concept that does not profit by the hexagonal form (see related example below). Also note the hexagonal form repeated at its base. The cluster columns are seen in other examples, (view related scans) some more successful than others, i.e. with scroll feet, or no feet, not to speak of uninteresting tops. This table has an intricately shaped apron and all its original drop pendants.
