A Mahogany Neoclassical Arm Chair, Boston, c.1830

This large scale armchair has a traditional scrolled crest with a Gothic arch cut out on either side of the backsplat. The backsplat is a crisply shaped closed lyre as opposed to the more common urn shape. The front seat rail is hexagonally shaped and like the crest rail and backsplat, is composed of highly figured mahogany. The side rails are shaped and relate to the curve of the rear rails. The arms are generously shaped and form a continuous stylistic line, which carries through to the saber legs. This chair retains an old, probably first, surface and has no breaks or repairs whatsoever. We note museum numbers (see detail).
