A Mahogany Sheraton/Federal Upholstered Open Armchair, New England, c.1810
This is a provincial example of the lolling chair form and is delicately executed throughout. Note the baluster shaped front legs and the stylized arm supports which lend a feeling of good support to the arms which terminate with small scrolls. The back is beautifully curved, which again terminates in a scroll similar to the arm.
What makes this chair special--aside
from form and simplicity--is the first surface. It
has never been refinished and only lightly waxed through
the years. It is in a perfect state of preservation.
Also, see
the frame prior to upholstery, which we have redone
in an appropriate historic fabric.
