A Mahogany Carved Empire Pembroke table, New England, c.1830

This is a vigorously carved drop leaf table that has a fully-developed center pedestal supported on a plinth with strongly carved paw feet. It is a well-executed gutsy table and speaks to the Late Classical period, i.e. the acanthus motif is used throughout as the carved design element. The top is composed of a single solid mahogany board with large leaves which are beautifully figured. The apron is banded with rosewood, which are flanked by corner blocks with turned drop pendants. This is a superb example of the period and the quality exhibited both in materials and craftsmanship.
