Mahogany Empire Sofa with carved Shells, Philadelphia, c.1830.

This sofa relates to a grouping of shell carved sofas, originating in Philadelphia at the end of the 1st quarter of the 19th Century. This sofa additionally has deeply carved front feet below highly figured mahogany panels. The crest rail is additionally carved at the ends with a rosewood band running the entire length. The base rail is further embellished with gadrooning. This sofa is in a fine state of preservation.
