Tiger Maple Highboy Base, Newport, c.1780

Private Collection

This base exhibits a typical Towsend-Goddard Newport leg, which is known for its strong, sculptural aspect. The stylized skirt is also typical of Newport work. These highboys, which were made in two detachable parts, were often intentionally separated and through time, went in different directions.
