Walnut Chippendale Chest, probably South Carolina, c. 1760-1780

Scroll down for 6 more photos

This chest follows a more English form, which was typical in general of Southern furniture schools in America. The interesting part of this dense casepiece is the sheer weight of its small size, 34 in. wide. It is extremely heavy and built as if to last many hundreds of years. Square colonial nails with excellent oxidation are used throughout, including the drawer ends of all drawers.
