Attribution to Salem is based on a related Chippendale chair with characteristic curved rear leg, (see illustration from New England Furniture, p.413). The "owl" splat was commonly used throughout New England. A related example showing a similar open crest rail is illustrated in 300 Years of American Furniture, p. 300.
