A Figured Mahogany Classical Sideboard with Gothic Arch Doors and Reeded Melon Feet, Brooklyn, New York, c.1840

This is a moderately sized sideboard that is fully developed.  Note that every section in the front opens to a cabinet or drawer.   The figured mahogany is book-matched on the backsplash and crossbanded with contrasting mahogany, all of which is flanked by two carved classical columns.  Of interest is that the top serving board, which is solid, and composed of plum pudding mahogany, with speckles throughout.  This was meant to be an exceptional piece, as nothing is left undone, and all aspects being of the best material.   For example, the sides are of solid mahogany, constructed similar to early chests.  In keeping with this, each of the back legs are a continuation of the primary board above, not attachments. 

There is a pull out wine chest with its original fittings. 

While this piece exhibits characteristics of Baltimore form, i.e. the reeded feet, we note an old stenciled label under the top serving board indicating "Brooklyn", the balance of which is unreadable.   It is, however, interesting to see how shops probably migrated out of New York, where the Phyfe school was located, out to the "suburbs" or country.  Its first class construction is New York all the way...even the solid mahogany columns which are usually veneered, has a horizontal figuring in the wood.  This was a choice piece.   We have completely french polished and cleaned it up.  It is in immaculate condition.
