A Rare Mahogany Bombe Federal/Classical Sideboard/Server, probably New York, c.1810

This is a rare and beautiful sideboard in the bombe form which, in American Furniture, is seen in earlier Boston Chippendale forms. If it weren't for the secondary woods, which are clearly American, one would consider it continental, as this is a very popular French form. However, the secondaries of poplar and pine place its origin in New World. The tell-tale New York style reeding on the legs and lower shelf also point to an American origin and probably New York.
The top, sides and shelf, are all of a beautifully striped mahogany of the best quality. View the close-ups of the side, with its beautifully scribed skirt. It is the work of a first class shop. The drawer fronts and surrounds are of the same mahogany, but of a thick veneer, as is typical of drawer construction, all with very fine dovetail construction.
This is a very fine and delicate sideboard of small scale and of a most desirable bombe shaped form. It was probably custom made, as we have not seen any other in our experience.
