Fine Walnut Gothic Sofa Table, probably New York, c. 1840

This is a fine late classical sofa table with good size drop leaves at each end of the table. As this piece is quite deep, it can also be considered a worktable.

Walnut is not to be found at this time with wide dimensions, but this table has good size slabs of solid walnut which are quite figured.  The base has figured walnut panels on each side of the main rectangular supports with accompanying flanking scrolled supports.

This is a beautifully crafted table at the very end of the classical period. It is interesting to know that it is not a mahogany but of walnut which hasn’t been used in furniture making since Queen Anne times. Styles come and go and we will begin to soon see the use of walnut in the finest case pieces as the century goes on, along with rosewood and oak.

Height: 29 in.  Depth: 28 in.   Width: 52 ½ in.
