This is an upholstered wing chair with dramatically splayed rear legs in the Philadelphia style, in addition to outstretched arms and wings. Of notable interest is the highly arched crest almost too good to believe.
I acquired this wing chair at Freeman‘s auction in Philadelphia. It was greatly over-stuffed and frankly didn’t look like much. It descended from the original owner, a notable Philadelphia mercantile family. This was relayed to me before the auction at the preview by Lynda Cane who has helped me through the years to acquire wonderful pieces that came through their doors. Also, If I weren’t there to tear apart the upholstery, I certainly wouldn’t have bought it. It’s things like this that give satisfaction and are what you have to do to build a worthy collection, not relying totally on dealers.
