This is an early walnut Chippendale pole screen. The carving is exceptional and is deeply carved throughout. It has a thick double frame designed to accommodate two decorative pieces. On one side is a traditional tapestry of the period and the other a very interesting painting on linen shown here, possibly Chinese.
The base is a tour de force of turnings and carving. Note the vase shaped base with its carved reeded column. The plinth upon which the column rests is carved at its edge, showing an acute awareness of detail. The cabriole legs are embellished with acanthus leafage and all is terminated and rests upon boldly carved claw and ball feet in the English style.
