This is a small-scale blocked front chest with a good-sized overhang on the top board. This is one of the criteria I look for. This chest also makes a strong statement with the scale of the base. The bracket feet are large, with well cut out corner brackets that are integrated into the blocking of the drawers above. Further, the center of the base has a pinwheel drop pendant characteristic of Newburyport, Massachusetts cabinet work.
The use of cherry indicates a more provincial, less expensive alternative to mahogany, however its compact size makes it desirable, and I seem to have never passed up a good block front, which are the most desirable of the early colonial chests.
