A Set of Six Federal Mahogany Side Chairs, New York, c. 1800

This is a fine set of chairs, including their original two arm chairs.  Many of these sets do not survive intact with the original finish and this was a prize when I found them from an estate in New York that Doyle’s in New York was handling.  I remember another high end dealer wanted them and I was going to have them.

While many of these chairs look alike, there are subtle differences that make for the best.  For example, note the legs are reeded and terminate in a spade foot.  Many are not reeded and some not even with a spade foot.

Later, I was able to acquire a pair of the same quality to make them a set of eight.  This pair is sw02098 in our collection.

Similar chairs are illustrated in American Antiques: The Hennage Collection by Elizabeth Stillinger, p.65, Fine Points of Furniture: Early American, by Albert Sack, p.56, and Opportunities in American Antiques #48 by Israel Sack, Inc., p65.  (See images for scans.)
