A Set of Six Federal Mahogany Side Chairs, New York, c. 1800

The shield back style is also a very desirable form and these are some of the best of that type.  For example, note the reeded leg–which is not always found on these pieces–as well as the detail of the shield.  Note the comparison with the back of an example in the American Wing of The Metropolitan Museum of Art shown in the images above.  They appear identical.

Later, I was able to acquire a pair of arm chairs of equal quality (sw02093) and, as luck would have it, another pair of side chairs (sw02094) also of the same quality.   It wasn’t just luck, however, as I was very active at the time and religiously pursued these forms not only through auctions, but through the many contacts I had made through the years that knew what I was looking for in building this collection.
