A Rare Mahogany Stand-up Desk of Small Scale, with Shell Interior, New Hampshire, c.1760

Standup desks are often very large, crude, and made from the locally available woods.  These are mostly found in working country farms.  This standup desk is definitely not one of those.

This desk is of a relatively small 29 inch wide size and is in two parts that made it portable.  The top part is the hinged slant top desk itself that fits into its base.  The base is composed of two drawers within a frame with a skirt finished with corner brackets and a drop pendant in the center.  All is supported by round tapered legs that terminate in button feet.

What makes this very special is the interior.  These standup desks are almost always plain, so what a surprise to find a stepped interior of drawers with a finely carved Dunlap school shell in the center above a blocked draw below all of which is set between two small vertical document drawers.

Height: 41 in.  Width: 29 in.
