A Chippendale armchair of rococo style, having an arched crest rail ending in carved volutes, over a pierced splat flanked by elongated C-scrolls, with broad sweeps of thumbnail-notching, centered by a carved rosette, with pierced keyhole decoration above and below. The molded arms with flat elbow rests end in scrolled handholds or knuckles.
Reference can be found in Patricia Kane, 300 Years of American Seating Furniture, cat. no. 95, which illustrates a chair with an almost identical splat, but with claw and ball feet. It should be noted that the Marlborough foot on this chair is rarely found on a New England example.
