A Rare Federal Ivory-inlaid Mahogany Chest of Drawers, attributed to John or Thomas Seymour,Boston, MA, c.1810

This is an exceptional chest, one of two in our collection (see sw01235).  Although similar, no two are exactly alike, as inlays and size vary. Robert Mussey chose this one for his exhibition of Seymour furniture at the Peabody Essex museum, and is illustrated in his book, The Furniture Masterworks of John and Thomas Seymour.   These classical chests are no doubt the finest example of Seymour’s oeuvre.

This Hepplewhite Seymour school chest of drawers exhibits a fine sensitivity to line and form, while being very delicate and feminine in character, they exude a sense of importance and stateliness.

For a good general reference, see Vernon C. Stoneman, John and Thomas Seymour, Cabinet Makers in Boston 1794-1816.

Height: 39 1/4 in. Width: 41 in. Depth: 21 1/2 in.
