A Rare Classical Mahogany Sideboard, New York, Labeled by Haines & Holmes, c.1825

This is an inspired sideboard with cylinders in the upper case that rotate, and open, to reveal an opening for bottles, etc. These cylinders are supported by columns with a mirror between them and its original marble serving area.

The sideboard is quite a high-end piece meant to impress and provide ample storage.  Of note are the gilded brass collenetts and the stenciling on all edges which was a hallmark on many Holmes & Haines pieces.  The mahogany chosen is of a rich flame grain.

Holmes and Haines were in the circle of Duncan Phyfe and produced many of these masterpieces for the grand townhouses that were being built in Manhattan in the late first quarter of the 19th century.

Illustrated: A related H&H labeled dressing table is illustrated in D’Ambrosio, Tobin.  Masterpieces of American Furniture in the Munson-William-Proctor Institute, cat. no. 10.

An identical label and a lengthy discussion of Holmes & Haines appears in Rini, Erik. “Edward Holmes & Simeon Haines: Cabinetmakers in Empire New York City.” Antiques Magazine, 15 May 2004, pp. 124–129.
