A Pair of Mahogany Lyre-Back Side Chairs with Sabre Legs, Slip Seats, and Brass-Strung Lyres, Philadelphia, c. 1815

The classical chair with the open lyre back splat was popular in several urban cities. These are pair crafted in Philadelphia. Unlike the New York examples with tiny paw feet these are of the saber leg style. The side profile of these chairs are beautifully sculptured.

This pair was handled by David Dutton, an old classical dealer and was illustrated in his ad in Antique & Fine Art Magazine, Summer, 2008.

Height: 31 ½ in.
