This is a Rolls-Royce in the world of sofas. It is large in every respect and obviously meant for a grand setting. We have left it upholstered to show the construction. Showing construction is important, especially in Classical sofas whose structure is never revealed, but is manifest once the upholstery goes on. This is often when fakery occurs and examination is imperative.
The feet on the sofa are beautifully carved with dolphins, which support fully carved panels on the base rail. Note this sofa was fitted originally with casters so as to be moved easily as it is a very heavy piece of furniture. The arm supports are dramatically scrolled and carved, which adds to its grandness. The crest rail is in three parts which is centered by a large carved shell.
This sofa is part of a grouping that was recognized early on as a masterpiece of late classical expression. As this was acquired upholstered we have left it as such as a study piece.
