A Mahogany Classical Sofa with Fully Carved Crest Tablets and Lion’s Masks, New York City, Attributed to Duncan Phyfe or Circle, c.1820

This classical sofa is later than the previous New York classical sofas but retains a beautifully carved paneled crest rail typical of this form. This relies on two bold paw legs with acanthus leafage above, which  is a later development in the period. What is special about this piece are the lion faces flanking the reeded seat rail just above the leg.  While there are others of this later form, this feature is unusual and altogether presents a very commanding aspect.  The quality of the carving and the wood are all the best of this late classical period.

Height: 35 ½ in.  Width: 75 in.
