This is a small Recamier or day bed, which is a tour de force of the classical style with magnificent cornucopia that are larger than life. The wood is a vibrant mahogany and every detail is explored to the fullest. Note the feet at one end that are reeded with small acanthus molding below, which certainly is gilding the lily.
I found this piece at Northeast Auctions, coming from a client of Hirschl & Adler in New York. This was no surprise to me as Stuart Feld, their director, always sought out the finest of the classical form… and this was no exception. I have never seen another of this quality come around at auction. It still brought a good price, as I wasn’t the only one with an eye to something wonderful.
