Table sw01855 is a very fine, probably Newport, formal candlestand. It is crafted with a square top with a molded edge of beautifully figured dense Cuban mahogany. The tapered shaft is finely fluted with an elegant fluted ring turned vase. A related column with matching fluting on column and vase is shown in Richard H. Randall, Jr., American Furniture, p.122.
The reasons for possible attribution to Newport are the fluted motif at the top of each leg, which is scooped out a bit at its end. Also, by virtue of the wood and type of craftsmanship it calls out “Newport” to us. Either way, it’s one of the best of its type.
