This sofa has a beautifully carved crest rail with a deep, dry old surface that has been left alone for many years. The carving is quintessential Phyfe, and the shape of the crest rail, which strongly arches back (see detailed image above), is a key trait. This type of curule foot is extremely rare and interestingly, gives the entire sofa a very springy and light lift. This sofa is in a fine state of preservation.
We have newly reupholstered this sofa. The entire upholstered foundation is rebuilt by Manfred Woerner, an upholsterer used by museums in the area; he is the best…and this sofa deserves it.
This sofa clearly demonstrates the departure from the Colonial in the conceptualization of the form. Here the wood framing and its carving is of the finest and typical of the best work of the New York school as exemplified with its wonderful crest rail. Although all of mahogany, it is quite light in concept. It truly is a masterpiece of the form.
