I remember well when this piece came up at Sotheby’s, part of the collection of an old time Pennsylvania family. This table comes from an old time Pennsylvania family/collector (see Butt family notes in the images attached). Often, this is when great things come out of the woodwork.
Leigh Keno and Jonathan Trace, two veteran antique dealers, were excited about this piece and decided to buy it together, something auction houses frown upon. Anyway, I bought it after the auction as I wasn’t going to get into a fight with them over acquiring it as there was other good material of interest. I reasoned that I could acquire it later if the markup was reasonable as I knew both of these dealers and did business with them over the years
Every element of this lowboy was wonderful, from its extra large stepped overhang with crimped corners, and additionally to its quarter columns, shell knees, and claw and ball feet. All of this packaged together in dark dense Cuban mahogany and retaining its original brasses…
This lowboy is part of a grouping structured around one long drawer over two short ones, often with a plain drop pendant in center. This is the only one I have seen of this grouping with a small precious shell carved into its pendant. Of course I had to have it!
