A Lyre clock by Etienne Maxant, Paris

This clock has an ormolu lyre form with bead trim, floral swag below the symbol of the Sun King, beaded bezel over the 4 1/2-in. porcelain dial marked Tilden, Thurber & Co., Providence, pierced, gilt-brass hands, eight-day time and strike movement, all on a ormolu mounted white marble base.

This piece had a lot of interested bidders competing for it at auction.  The reason was the gold is in “like new” condition that just radiates.   For a related example, see Sotheby’s 19th Century Furniture and Decorative Arts, lot 21, June 6, 2014.
