A Rare Fine George I Walnut Daybed with Elaborately Carved Crest and Stretchers, England, c.1730

There are daybeds and there are daybeds; this one could go right into the Metropolitan museum.  It’s constructed of the desirable walnut and has a deeply carved crest which is a work of art unto itself.   The stiles which support the moveable caned back are stop-fluted, which is unusual and another display of craftsmanship.  Between the legs, the side stretchers are elaborately carved, and condition wise, this piece has had no replacements or alterations, albeit some breaks in the bottom stretchers have been reinforced but are all there.

The caning appears in good condition, and, if the daybed is to be placed in area that will bring it routine usage, we would suggest putting an upholstered cushion with a firm base over the seat to avoid stressing it.
